following the release of synkro aka joe mcbride collection of his formative early works earlier this year, apollo recordings is proud to present a brand new ep that draws on the rich heritage of library music. despite having come up during the dubstep era mcbrides music has always resisted easy classification - hand in hand sees him shift his musical focus in a yet more cinematic direction. mcbride explains: the record was inspired and influenced by my love of electronic 80s uk library records like the chappell av series, bruton, soundstage & de wolfe music library. theres a lot of synth work that carries on from my album using my trusted juno-6 / sh101 / jx8p combo with the addition of drum samples via an old akai s2800 i purchased recently. most sounds ive made from scratch on hardware based on sounds used in the library records i mentioned above along with a few cheeky samples.- synkro s signature expansive atmospherics are still very much present, but now they have been burnished by soaring synth pads and pulsing drum tracks that call to mind the haunted melancholy of john carpenter or contemporary such as legowelt or andy stott. rhythmically hand in hand sees mcbride moving somewhat away from his usual off kilter programming inspired by 2-step and garage, embracing the steady pulse of 4:4 which turns out to be an effortless fit.

7th storey projects is pleased to welcome back the myor massiv head honcho for his 3rd release on our label. earlier this year, coco bryce travelled to tokyo and osaka for a small series of gigs. thoroughly impressed by his experiences there, upon returning home, he immediately took to crafting a slew of jungle and hip hop tracks, heavily influenced by everything he d seen, heard, felt and tasted in the land of the rising sun. the ep kicks off with its title track, ayakashi. dark, fierce and mysterious like the mythical creatures it was named after, it builds up slowly, utilizing a combination of chopped up japanese percussion, haunting flutes and hot pants breaks, before switching to full on amen assault mode halfway through the tune. shinjuku is one of tokyos most well known wards, and also the place where coco found the records from which the samples were sourced to construct this number: a turntablism beat/scratch album, and a compilation of traditional work songs, this particular one originating from the gold mines of the island of hokkaido. on the b1 track, kaguya, he takes a more gentle approach: sweet, yet melancholic, like the miyazaki movie of the same name. the ep is rounded off with hotaru, which borrows from an entirely different source of inspiration, namely dj krush s abstract take on boom bap hip hop. shards of mid-90s mo wax are blended with anime samples, making for a solid two and a half minutes of golden era-esque head nodding.

austin-based musician eliot lipp delivers “skywave”, an album lipp has been working on for the past several months. with influences from sci-fi soundtracks and 70s and 80s funk, he channels a collection of weird, high-definition, melodic beats. in these nine songs lipp feels he “might have everything i want to say in one moment.” recreating key musical moments in a current and relatable way was the goal in producing skywave and giving himself permission to take some risks as well. with a versatile approach, lipp has created opportunities to connect with some of the artists he first looked up to, playing in cities across america and abroad always returning to his hometown in the pacific northwest. collaboration plays a role in all his albums. he’s been a fan of emancipator for a years now and was beyond excited to get his “not quite awake” remix. he asked dmc champ chris karns to scratch on ‘joyride’. in addition to doing cuts, chris ended up playing live drums and layering unique vocal samples. ‘reflection’ came from a jam session with gibbz and cherub in their nashville studio. one of lipp’s biggest musical influences last year came from a group of producers from seattle that call themselves fish tank friends. most of them had a hand in the early stages of ‘spiders’. with monthly trips planned from texas back to washington, he anticipates more evenings surrounded by friends, fans, and new listeners where he brings everyone together through the touch of a button.

however you heard it—one thing was very clear: despite their time apart, artifacts emcees tame one and el da sensei sounded as fresh as ever on “easter.” the new jersey rappers’ venomous flows are boosted by the neck-breaking production of acclaimed north carolina producer khrysis. making the cipher complete is the turntable work of dj dutchmaster, who provides the scratch hook and outro cuts.

paul blackford returns to cpu this time donning a 7inch downtempo tip. light years vinyl takes 2 of the highlights from the accompanying lp, all of which demonstrate his versatility in expressing his hip hop and funk influences from an electronic music perspective. on first pass you might think you are listening to nightmares on wax, but without the heavy sampling as blackford favours creating his sounds from scratch. comparisons to photeks hidden camera can be made in terms of atmosphere but keeping things within a slower trip hop framework. light years is for chilling out, but theres a strong temptation to mix hip-hop vocals over the top due to the lps solid instrumental foundations.

i released the original 12inch volume of five fingers of death battle breaks way back in 1998, while i was living in oakland and then san francisco during a time of incredible movement and creativity within the suddenly exploding scratch dj scene. the term turntablist, coined by dj disk, had yet to really catch on outside of the bay area scratch fraternity. having recently moved to california from new york, pauls turntable aesthetics were strictly 80s east coast and was more concerned with catching doubles (beat juggling) and overall party rocking. in other words, the science of scratching was not something i was even contemplating.needless to say, i was completely amazed and overwhelmed with what djs like qbert, shortcut, apollo and mixmaster mike were doing. distinctive tenor singer linval thompson honed his singing craft in his formative years, growing in the west kingston ghetto of three mile, where he was associated with dennis brown, johnnie clarke and al campbell. a subsequent move to new york brought him into expatriate act hugh hendricks and the buccaneers, with his debut recording, ‘no other woman,’ being made circa early 1974 at patrick alley’s art craft studio. a series of other singles followed from his new york sojourn, but the return to jamaica in 1974 led to more noteworthy singles for stamma hobson, phil pratt and lee ‘scratch’ perry, with ‘jah jah redder than red’ and ‘girl you’ve got to run,’ both cut at the black ark for pratt, being the most successful. yet, it was all but a prelude to the breakthrough success he would finally achieve upon teaming up with bunny lee for ‘don’t cut off your dreadlocks,’ one of the most popular releases of 1975, a debut album of the same name, issued by third world in 1976, contained some of his most outstanding material, including the devotional ‘jah jah the conqueror’ and ‘long long dreadlocks,’ the romance thriller ‘black princess lady’ and the anti-rude boy opus, ‘cool down your temper.’
